At the core of my work.
1. Science is Everywhere.
2. A good Scientist learns from “Failure”.
3. We can have FUN while we work.
My life has taken a lot of twists and turns. The term “trans” - referring to opposite or on the other side of - applies to more than just my gender. Learning to love myself has necessitated accepting that “both and” applies to many parameters of my life.
I thought being a scientist meant I couldn’t’ be an artist.
I thought being an athlete meant that I couldn’t be a dancer.
I thought I was too weird, and now find myself celebrated for the eccentric genderqueer oddball scientist that I am.
About DR. ATOM
I’ve accumulated and shed identities throughout my life, others have morphed and changed, but my identity as a scientist has persisted throughout. Science, the method of understanding the world, has transformed every aspect of my life. I hold my identity as a scientist sacred, and my life’s work is sharing it with others.
I have worked as a neuroscience and education researcher, science educator, science entertainer, mentor, activist, and educational game developer. As a teacher, I have been a teacher of scientists, teacher of teachers, teacher of mentors, and a teacher of the public. I’m an experienced facilitator and mentor having served as the leader for a long-running transgender support group and multiple science training programs focused on supporting diverse perspectives in science.
